📝 Usage Notes

ask a question in a polite way

📖 How to use it

A polite way to ask a question, seeking explanation or reason, often showing uncertainty or concern.

Attaches to Attach to the plain form of verbs and adjectives, and to nouns/na-adjectives followed by 'な' (i.e., noun + なのでしょうか, na-adjective stem + なのでしょうか). For verbs and i-adjectives, use the plain present or past form before のでしょうか.

のでしょうか is a polite question form that asks for a reason or explanation, often when the speaker is wondering about something or seeking confirmation. It is softer and more tentative than a direct ですか question, and it can carry a nuance of concern or curiosity.

This pattern is commonly used in spoken Japanese, especially in service or formal situations, but it also appears in writing. It is formed by adding のでしょうか to the plain form of a verb or adjective, or to a noun/na-adjective with な. For example, from 行く (iku) you get 行くのでしょうか, and from 静か (shizuka) you get 静かなのでしょうか.

When you want to ask 'Why is it that...?' or 'What should I do?', のでしょうか adds a polite, thoughtful tone. It is not as blunt as んですか, which can sound more direct. In conversation, it is common to use it when you are worried or when you want to show respect to the listener.

明日の試験は難しくなるのでしょうか。
Ashita no shiken wa muzukashiku naru no deshou ka.
I wonder if tomorrow's exam will be difficult.
どうして彼は来なかったのでしょうか。
Doushite kare wa konakatta no deshou ka.
I wonder why he didn't come.
この電車は渋谷に止まるのでしょうか。
Kono densha wa Shibuya ni tomaru no deshou ka.
Does this train stop at Shibuya? (polite, uncertain)
Not のですか (no desu ka) のですか asks a direct question seeking explanation, while のでしょうか is more polite and tentative, often used when the speaker is unsure or wants to soften the question.
Register Polite and somewhat formal; used in both spoken and written Japanese, but in casual conversation it may sound too stiff.
