Basic greetings, self-introduction, reading hiragana and katakana fluently, and around a hundred kanji. Most people reach it in three to six months.
Everyday Japanese
Everyday conversation, the て-form and past tense, and enough kanji to read simple signs and menus without guessing.
The bridge
The level most learners stall at. Casual speech, longer reading, and the grammar that connects sentences rather than ending them.
Real-world fluency
Newspapers, workplace Japanese and abstract topics. This is the level employers usually ask for.
Academic and professional
Academic writing, formal speech and nuance. Everything, essentially, with speed.
