📝 Usage Notes

together with; at the same time as

📖 How to use it

Expresses that two things happen or exist together, either concurrently or in mutual accompaniment.

Attaches to Attach to the dictionary form of verbs, the plain form of adjectives, or directly to nouns (e.g., 辞書形 + と共に, い形容詞の辞書形 + と共に, な形容詞の語幹 + と共に, 名詞 + と共に).

This pattern is used to say that something happens at the same time as something else, or that two things go together. It often appears in written language and formal speech, giving a sense of simultaneity or close connection. When attached to a verb, it can mean 'as' or 'at the same time as'. When attached to a noun, it means 'together with' that noun, often in a broader sense of accompanying or being part of something.

卒業すると共に、新しい生活が始まる。
Sotsugyousuru to tomo ni, atarashii seikatsu ga hajimaru.
As I graduate, a new life begins.
都市の人口が増えると共に、交通問題も深刻になっている。
Toshi no jinkou ga fueru to tomo ni, koutsuu mondai mo shinkoku ni natte iru.
As the city population increases, traffic problems are becoming serious.
彼は家族と共に海外で暮らしている。
Kare wa kazoku to tomo ni kaigai de kurashite iru.
He lives abroad together with his family.
Not と一緒に (to issho ni) と一緒に is more casual and specifically means 'together with' in a physical or social sense (doing an activity with someone). と共に can also mean 'together with' but is more formal and also has the additional meaning of 'at the same time as', which と一緒に does not have. For example, 友達と一緒に映画を見る (I watch a movie with my friend) vs. 経済の発展と共に生活が変わった (As the economy developed, life changed).
Register This is a formal, written-style expression. In everyday conversation, it sounds stiff; use と一緒に for 'together with' or に伴って (ni tomonatte) for 'as' in speech.
