Build the Japanese sentence

English leans on word order to say who did what: the dog bit the man and the man bit the dog use identical words to opposite effect. Japanese does not work that way. Each phrase carries a particle announcing its own role, so the order can move without the meaning moving with it.

Two things are nevertheless fixed, and they are the two this game drills.

The verb goes last

Always, at the end of its clause. 私はりんごを食べます is I-topic, apple-object, eat. This is why listening to Japanese feels like waiting: the thing that tells you whether something was done, not done, wanted, refused or merely considered arrives at the very end. Beginners who translate as they hear run out of sentence before the verb turns up.

Modifiers come before what they modify

Adjectives precede nouns, adverbs precede verbs, and — the one that catches people — entire relative clauses precede the noun they describe, with no equivalent of "that" or "which". 私が昨日買った本 is "the book I bought yesterday", assembled back to front from an English point of view.

Everything else is negotiable

私は本を読みます and 本を私は読みます are both correct; the second simply foregrounds the book. Elements are freely dropped when obvious — a Japanese sentence often has no stated subject at all. This is why the tiles here are chunks and not words: the chunk is the unit that actually slides around, and rebuilding sentences from chunks trains the instinct that matters.

What to do with this

Start at your level and do not rush. When a sentence resists, tap the English, work out which chunk is the verb, and place it last — that alone solves a surprising share of them. Anything you get wrong comes back through Review, which is where the actual learning happens.
