Connects two clauses to express that the second clause contradicts what would be expected from the first, meaning 'although' or 'even though'.
Attaches to
Attach のに to the plain form of verbs, い-adjectives, and the plain copula だ for nouns and な-adjectives. For な-adjectives and nouns, the だ becomes な before のに (e.g., 元気なのに).
のに is used when you state a fact or situation and then mention an unexpected result. It sounds like you are complaining, expressing disappointment, or simply noting a contradiction. For example, if someone studied hard but failed the test, you could say 勉強したのに、テストに落ちた. It often shows that the speaker feels the result is unfair or illogical.
雨が降っているのに、外で遊んでいる。
Ame ga futte iru noni, soto de asonde iru.
Even though it's raining, they are playing outside.
高いのに、あまり美味しくない。
Takai noni, amari oishikunai.

Not けど / が
けど is more neutral and simply contrasts two facts, while のに adds a sense of surprise or dissatisfaction. のに is often used when the speaker feels the result is unreasonable.

のに is common in both spoken and written Japanese, but in casual conversation, the final い is often dropped to のに (e.g., 高いのに) – however, this is informal. In formal writing, のに is still used.
