📝 Usage Notes

from the fact that~

📖 How to use it

ことから indicates the reason or basis for a judgment, equivalent to 'from the fact that' or 'because of the fact that'.

Attaches to Attach to the plain form of verbs and adjectives (dictionary form, past tense) and to nouns followed by だ (or である for formal writing). For な-adjectives, use plain form な without だ (e.g., 静かなことから).

ことから is used when you state a fact or situation and then draw a conclusion or explain something based on that fact. It often appears in explanations, definitions, or when giving a reason for a name, impression, or assumption. The clause before ことから is a nominalized fact, so you need the plain form.

この町は古い建物が多いことから、「歴史の町」と呼ばれています。
Kono machi wa furui tatemono ga ooi koto kara, 'rekishi no machi' to yobarete imasu.
Because this town has many old buildings, it is called a 'historic town'.
彼は毎日練習したことから、日本語が上手になった。
Kare wa mainichi renshuu shita koto kara, nihongo ga jouzu ni natta.
From the fact that he practiced every day, his Japanese improved.
この川は水がきれいなことから、たくさんの魚が住んでいる。
Kono kawa wa mizu ga kirei na koto kara, takusan no sakana ga sunde iru.
Because the water in this river is clean, many fish live here.
Not ことから vs. から ことから is more formal and emphasizes the fact as a basis for judgment, often used in writing or public speech. から is used in both speaking and writing to simply state a reason.
Register Formal and written; not typical in casual conversation.
