📝 Usage Notes

and; or; connecting particle

📖 How to use it

A particle used to list two or more items or actions, implying that the list is not exhaustive.

Attaches to Attaches to nouns directly, or to the plain past form of verbs and adjectives (e.g., 食べたや) but this is less common and more literary. For nouns, just place や between the nouns.

や is used to connect nouns when you want to give examples from a larger set. It suggests there are other things not mentioned. For example, if you say 本やペン, you mean 'books, pens, and other things'. Unlike と, which lists everything, や leaves the list open. You can also use や with verbs, but in modern conversation it is more common to use たり or just connect with て. Using や with verbs is more typical in written or formal Japanese.

カバンに本やノートを入れました。
Kaban ni hon ya nōto o iremashita.
I put things like books and notebooks in my bag.
日曜日は勉強したり、掃除や洗濯をします。
Nichiyōbi wa benkyō shitari, sōji ya sentaku o shimasu.
On Sundays I do things like study, clean, and do laundry.
パンや牛乳を買ってきてください。
Pan ya gyūnyū o katte kite kudasai.
Please buy some bread, milk, and so on.
Not と lists all items completely; や gives examples and implies others. For instance, 本とペン means exactly a book and a pen, nothing else. 本やペン means books, pens, and possibly other things.
Register Neutral in spoken and written Japanese; appropriate for all situations.
