📝 Usage Notes

even if; even though; regardless of

📖 How to use it

Expresses 'even if' or 'even though', conceding a condition while asserting that the outcome does not change.

Attaches to Attaches to the plain past form of verbs and adjectives, or to a noun followed by だった. For nouns and な-adjectives, use だった (e.g., 学生だったにしても). For い-adjectives, use かった (e.g., 高かったにしても). For verbs, use the past tense (e.g., したにしても).

This pattern is used to say that even if something is true, the result or opinion remains the same. It often carries a sense of 'even granting that...' or 'even in that case.' For example, you might say that even if you have a lot of money, you cannot buy happiness, or even if the test was hard, you should have studied more. The nuance is that the condition is real or possible, but not decisive.

行きたかったにしても、時間がなかったから行けなかった。
Ikitakatta ni shite mo, jikan ga nakatta kara ikenakatta.
Even if I had wanted to go, I couldn't because I didn't have time.
高かったにしても、必要なものだから買った。
Takakatta ni shite mo, hitsuyou na mono dakara katta.
Even though it was expensive, I bought it because it was necessary.
学生だったにしても、ルールは守らなければならない。
Gakusei datta ni shite mo, ruuru wa mamoranakereba naranai.
Even if you are a student, you must follow the rules.
Not ても (after te-form) ても is more general and used in everyday speech, while にしても is a bit more formal and often implies a hypothetical or concessive tone. Also, にしても attaches to the past tense, whereas ても attaches to the te-form.
Register Neutral, but slightly formal; commonly used in writing and formal speech, less casual than ても.
