📝 Usage Notes

while; during; as; simultaneously

📖 How to use it

ながら expresses two actions or states happening simultaneously, with the main action following it.

Attaches to Attach ながら to the ます-stem of a verb (the form before ます). For example, 食べます → 食べながら. It cannot attach to the dictionary form or any other form.

ながら links two actions done by the same person at the same time. The verb before ながら describes the background or accompanying action, and the verb after it is the main action. For instance, 'walking while listening to music' would be 音楽を聞きながら歩く (きく → 聞き). The subject must be the same for both actions. This pattern is common in daily conversation and writing, but it sounds slightly formal when used in casual speech; still, it is natural in both.

音楽を聞きながら、歩きます。
Ongaku o kiki nagara, arukimasu.
I walk while listening to music.
テレビを見ながら、ご飯を食べました。
Terebi o mi nagara, gohan o tabemashita.
I ate my meal while watching TV.
本を読みながら、電車を待っています。
Hon o yomi nagara, densha o matte imasu.
I'm waiting for the train while reading a book.
Not ながらも ながらも means 'even though' and attaches to the same form, but it expresses contrast, not simultaneity. For example, 知っていながらも (even though I knew). While ながら shows two actions at once, ながらも shows a concession.
Register Neutral; used in both speaking and writing, but in very casual speech, people might use 〜ながら as well, though it can sound a bit stilted; it's perfectly acceptable in everyday conversation.
