Expresses that something is done or happens as if a certain situation were true, often contrary to reality.
Attaches to
Attaches to the plain form of verbs (dictionary, past, negative), to the plain form of adjectives (い-adjectives and な-adjectives with だ replaced by である in the non-past), and to nouns with である. For example: まるで夢であるかのように, 知っているかのように, 見なかったかのように.
This phrase literally means 'as if it were that...' and is used to describe an action or state that resembles another situation, even if that situation is not real. It often pairs with まるで to emphasize the likeness. The clause before かのように can be in present or past tense; the tense depends on what the 'as if' situation refers to, not the main clause tense. It is common in writing and formal speech, but also used in everyday conversation with verbs like 言う, 振る舞う, 見る.
彼は何も知らないかのように、黙っていた。
Kare wa nanimo shiranai ka no you ni, damatte ita.
He remained silent as if he knew nothing.
まるで夢であるかのように、時間が過ぎていった。
Marude yume de aru ka no you ni, jikan ga sugite itta.
Time passed as if it were a dream.
彼女はその話を初めて聞いたかのように、驚いて見せた。
Kanojo wa sono hanashi o hajimete kiita ka no you ni, odoroite miseta.
She pretended to be surprised as if she had heard that story for the first time.
Not ように
ように simply expresses resemblance or purpose ('like'), while かのように emphasizes that the situation is not real, often with a nuance of pretense or hypothetical comparison. For instance, まるで鳥のように飛ぶ means 'fly just like a bird' (real resemblance), but あたかも鳥であるかのように飛ぶ means 'fly as if one were a bird' (which a human cannot actually be).
