📝 Usage Notes

now that; since; so long as; because

📖 How to use it

Expresses 'now that' or 'since' a certain situation exists, the speaker feels a strong obligation or determination to follow through.

Attaches to Attach to the plain present/past form of verbs (e.g., する, した), i-adjectives (e.g., 高い), and na-adjective stems plus だ/である (e.g., 静かだ). Also attaches to nouns with だ/である (e.g., 学生だ).

からには is used when you acknowledge a fact or decision, and from that point on, you have a strong sense of duty, commitment, or inevitability. It often appears in sentences where the speaker expresses resolve, like 'since I've decided to do this, I will do my best.' It is more forceful and personal than just saying から, because it emphasizes that the situation cannot be undone.

約束したからには、必ず守らなければならない。
Yakusoku shita kara ni wa, kanarazu mamoranakereba naranai.
Now that I've made a promise, I must definitely keep it.
日本に来たからには、日本の文化をしっかり学びたい。
Nihon ni kita kara ni wa, Nihon no bunka o shikkari manabitai.
Since I've come to Japan, I want to learn Japanese culture properly.
やると決めたからには、最後までやり遂げるつもりだ。
Yaru to kimeta kara ni wa, saigo made yaritogeru tsumori da.
Now that I've decided to do it, I intend to see it through to the end.
Not から (because) から simply gives a reason, while からには adds a nuance of strong commitment or inevitability. For example, 雨が降ったから、試合を中止した is a plain cause-effect, but 雨が降ったからには、試合は中止だろう implies that since it's raining, cancellation is unavoidable.
Register This pattern is used in both spoken and written Japanese, but it often appears in formal speeches or when making firm declarations, so it may sound a bit strong in casual conversation.
