📝 Usage Notes

while; before~

📖 How to use it

Expresses doing something during a period or before a state changes.

Attaches to Attach to the dictionary form (non-past) of verbs, the ない-form (without ない) for negative verbs, or the ている form. Also attaches to nouns with の (e.g., 子供のうちに), and to い-adjectives and な-adjective stems with な (e.g., 若いうちに, 元気なうちに).

うちに means 'while' or 'before'. It sets a time frame: do something during that time before it ends. With dictionary form verbs, it often implies 'before it's too late' or 'while the chance exists'. With ている form, it describes doing something during an ongoing state. With negative verbs, it means 'while it is still not the case', like 'before it becomes...'
