📝 Usage Notes

while/during~ something happened

📖 How to use it

Used to express that something happened during a specific time period or event.

Attaches to Attach to the dictionary form of verbs, nouns followed by の, and な-adjectives followed by な. For い-adjectives, attach to the adjective followed by の (e.g., 忙しいの間に).

This pattern indicates that an action or state occurred within a certain duration or while another event was ongoing. The key is that the action in the main clause is completed or happens at some point inside that time frame, not throughout the entire period. For example, if you say 寝ている間に電話がありました, it means the phone rang at some point while you were sleeping, not that it rang continuously.

It is often used to talk about opportunities or changes that happen during a certain period, like when someone is away or busy. The time period can be expressed with a verb (dictionary form), a noun with の, or an adjective. Remember that the main clause often uses past tense to describe a completed action that occurred during that time.

This pattern is neutral in formality and commonly used in both speaking and writing. It is important not to confuse it with 間 (without に), which describes an action that continues for the whole period. For example, 寝ている間、ずっと音楽を聞いていました means you listened to music for the entire duration of sleeping.

日本にいる間に、たくさん旅行しました。
Nihon ni iru aida ni, takusan ryokou shimashita.
While I was in Japan, I traveled a lot.
母が料理をしている間に、私は部屋を掃除しました。
Haha ga ryouri o shite iru aida ni, watashi wa heya o souji shimashita.
While my mother was cooking, I cleaned my room.
夏休みの間に、海へ行きました。
Natsu yasumi no aida ni, umi e ikimashita.
During summer vacation, I went to the sea.
Not 間 (without に) 間 describes an action that continues for the entire period, while 間に describes an action that happens at some point within that period. For example, 寝ている間、ずっとテレビをつけていた means the TV was on the whole time, but 寝ている間に電話があった means the phone rang once during that time.
Register This pattern is neutral and used in both casual and formal situations, in speaking and writing.
