📝 Usage Notes

to finish; to end

📖 How to use it

The verb 終わる means 'to finish' or 'to end', used when something comes to a natural conclusion or is completed.

Attaches to 終わる is a godan (u-verb) and is used with the particle が: [noun] が終わる. It does not take a direct object. To express finishing an action, use the て-form of another verb plus しまう (e.g., 食べてしまう) or the ます-stem plus 終わる (e.g., 読み終わる).

終わる is an intransitive verb, so the thing that ends is the subject, marked with が. For example, 会議が終わる means 'the meeting ends.' It is not used with を to mean 'finish something'—that would be 終える (transitive), but 終える is more formal and less common in daily speech. When you want to say you finish doing something, combine the ます-stem of another verb with 終わる, like 食べ終わる (finish eating) or 読み終わる (finish reading). This is a common pattern and works with many action verbs. Note that 終わる can also be used as a standalone verb in past tense: 終わった (it ended). In casual speech, you often hear 終わった used to mean 'it's over' or 'I'm done.'

会議は五時に終わります。
Kaigi wa go-ji ni owarimasu.
The meeting ends at five.
宿題をやり終わったら、遊びに行こう。
Shukudai o yariowattara, asobi ni ikou.
Once I finish doing my homework, let's go out to play.
あの映画はもう終わったよ。
Ano eiga wa mou owatta yo.
That movie is already over.
Not 終える 終える is the transitive counterpart and takes a direct object with を (e.g., 仕事を終える). 終わる is intransitive and takes が. Use 終わる when the subject ends by itself or naturally; use 終える when someone ends something clearly and formally.
Register 終わる is neutral and used in both speaking and writing; the ます-stem + 終わる pattern is common in everyday conversation.
