📝 Usage Notes

topic marker

📖 How to use it

The particle は marks the topic of a sentence, telling what the sentence is about.

Attaches to Attaches to a noun or a noun phrase. The noun can be a subject, object, or other element that is being highlighted as the topic.

は is the topic marker. It introduces what you are talking about, and the rest of the sentence gives information about that topic. For example, in 私は学生です (watashi wa gakusei desu), 私は sets the topic as 'I', and the sentence says 'am a student'. The topic can be a subject, object, or even a time or place. When the topic is also the subject, it replaces the subject particle が. When it is an object, it replaces を. So you often see は used where the role is clear from context.

私は毎朝コーヒーを飲みます。
Watashi wa maiasa kōhī o nomimasu.
I drink coffee every morning.
今日は天気がいいです。
Kyō wa tenki ga ii desu.
The weather is nice today.
この本は面白いです。
Kono hon wa omoshiroi desu.
This book is interesting.
Not が (subject marker) は sets the topic (what the sentence is about), while が marks the subject (who does the action or who is described). In questions like 誰が来ますか (who is coming?), you must use が because you are asking for the specific subject. But in statements like 私は学生です, は tells the listener what the topic is. Often が is used for new information, は for known or general topics.
Register Used in both spoken and written Japanese, neutral formality. Note that は is also read as 'ha' in some words, and when written as a particle it is pronounced 'wa'. Also, the same character is used for the conditional 'if' pattern, but that is a different usage.
