📝 Usage Notes

whenever; every time

📖 How to use it

Expresses that something happens every time a particular action or event occurs.

Attaches to Attach to the dictionary form of a verb or to a noun followed by の (e.g., 行くたびに, 旅行のたびに). For nouns, use の before たびに.

たびに means 'every time' or 'whenever' and describes a repeated action or event that accompanies another. It emphasizes that each occurrence of the first action triggers the second. It is often used for habitual actions or personal experiences.

その店に行くたびに、新商品を買ってしまう。
Sono mise ni iku tabi ni, shin shouhin o katte shimau.
Every time I go to that store, I end up buying a new product.
彼女は会うたびに髪型が変わっている。

Jishin no tabi ni, hinan basho o kakunin shite iru.

Not とき(に) とき means 'when' and is used for a general time relation, not necessarily repeated. たびに explicitly means 'every time', so it implies repetition. For example, '行くとき' could mean 'when I go' (one time), but '行くたびに' means 'every time I go'.
Register Neutral, common in both spoken and written Japanese.
