📝 Usage Notes

depending on; so~

📖 How to use it

Expresses that something depends on a condition or situation, similar to 'depending on' in English.

Attaches to Attach to a noun directly, or to the dictionary form of a verb followed by かどうか (whether...) before 次第で.

Use 次第で to say that the outcome or situation changes based on something else. It's like saying 'it depends on X'. The noun before it is the deciding factor. For example, 結果は君の努力次第だ means 'The result depends on your effort.' You can also use it with verbs in the form 〜かどうか次第で, meaning 'depending on whether...' as in 行くかどうか次第で (depending on whether we go). This pattern is common in both speech and writing, but it sounds a bit formal when used in casual conversation. It's neutral in politeness, so you can use it in most situations, but in very casual talk you might hear 次第 by itself or 次第でね.

明日の予定は天気次第で決めましょう。
Ashita no yotei wa tenki shidai de kimemashou.
Let's decide tomorrow's plans depending on the weather.
成功するかどうかは、君の努力次第だ。
Seikou suru ka dou ka wa, kimi no doryoku shidai da.
Whether you succeed or not depends on your effort.
彼が来るかどうか次第で、会議の進め方が変わる。
Kare ga kuru ka dou ka shidai de, kaigi no susumekata ga kawaru.
How we proceed with the meeting changes depending on whether he comes.
Not によって によって can also mean 'depending on', but it often indicates a cause or means, and it can be used with a wider range of nouns. 次第で strongly implies that the result is determined by that factor alone. For example, '国によって習慣が違う' (customs vary by country) cannot be replaced with 次第で.
Register Neutral to slightly formal; used in both spoken and written Japanese, but in casual speech you might hear it less often than in formal contexts.
