📝 Usage Notes

because; since; seeing that

📖 How to use it

States a reason or premise that the speaker takes as given, leading to a conclusion or obligation.

Attaches to Attach to the plain past form of a verb (e.g., した以上は), or to a noun + である (e.g., 学生である以上は). Also attaches to な-adjective stem + である.

以上は is used when the speaker treats something as an established fact or decision and then draws a logical consequence. It often carries a sense of responsibility or determination: since you have done X, you must do Y. The clause before 以上は is the reason, and the clause after is the result or obligation. It is more emphatic than から or ので, and it is common in speeches, formal statements, or when someone is admonishing themselves or others. For example, if you say '約束した以上は守る', you mean that since you made a promise, you have no choice but to keep it. The pattern is typically used in written or formal spoken contexts, and it sounds strong, so it is not used in casual chit-chat.

やると決めた以上は、最後までやり遂げるつもりだ。
Yaru to kimeta ijou wa, saigo made yaritogeru tsumori da.
Since I've decided to do it, I intend to see it through to the end.
この仕事を引き受けた以上は、責任を持ってやりなさい。
Kono shigoto o hikiuketa ijou wa, sekinin o motte yarinasai.
Now that you've taken on this job, do it with responsibility.
学生である以上は、勉強を第一に考えるべきだ。
Gakusei de aru ijou wa, benkyou o daiichi ni kangaeru beki da.
As long as you are a student, you should put studying first.
Not からには からには has the same meaning and usage, and is more common in everyday speech. 以上は sounds more formal and emphatic. In casual conversation, からには is safer.
Register Formal and emphatic; used in written language and in formal speeches, not in casual conversation.
