This pattern expresses that an event or situation serves as a turning point or opportunity to start something new or change behavior.
Attaches to
Attach to a noun (often an event, occasion, or circumstance) directly: noun + を機に. The noun can be a plain noun or a nominalized verb phrase (e.g., の + noun).
を機に means 'taking the opportunity of' or 'with X as a turning point.' It highlights a specific event that triggers a change, a decision, or the beginning of a new habit. It is often used in formal contexts, such as speeches, announcements, or written statements, to explain a life change or a significant shift in circumstances. For example, marriage, a new job, graduation, or a move can be the '機' (opportunity).
結婚を機に、喫煙をやめました。
Kekkon o ki ni, kitsuen o yamemashita.
I quit smoking when I got married (using the marriage as the opportunity).
留学を機に、自分の将来について真剣に考えるようになった。

Not をきっかけに
をきっかけに is more casual and can be used in everyday conversation. を機に is more formal and often used for significant life events or in written contexts. In speech, をきっかけに is common; を機に might sound stiff.
