📝 Usage Notes

on the occasion of; at the time of

📖 How to use it

Expresses 'on the occasion of' or 'at the time of' a formal event or action.

Attaches to Attach to the dictionary form of a verb or a noun (often a verbal noun like 出発, 開催). For nouns, use に際して directly after the noun, as in 出発に際して. For verbs, use the plain dictionary form: 出発するに際して.

に際して is used to talk about the time or occasion of a significant, often formal event. It has a written, formal flavor and appears in announcements, speeches, and official documents. It is not used in casual conversation. When attaching to a verb, it must be in its dictionary form; when attaching to a noun, the noun directly precedes に際して. The pattern can be used to describe something that happens before or during the event, or as a condition for something else.

Not に当たって に当たって is also formal and means 'when doing' but often implies a preparatory action or a specific point in time. に際して emphasizes the occasion itself and is often used for events like ceremonies or departures. In many cases they are interchangeable, but に際して sounds slightly more formal and is often used in written notices.
Register Formal and primarily used in written language or formal speech, such as announcements, letters, or speeches.
