📝 Usage Notes

even if; even though; no matter how

📖 How to use it

Expresses 'even if' or 'even though', often implying the result is the same regardless of the condition.

Attaches to For verbs, attach to the plain past form: 食べる → 食べたって; 行く → 行ったって. For い-adjectives, attach ったって to the stem (e.g., 高くたって), but note that the adverbial form く is used: 高い → 高くたって. For な-adjectives, attach だって: 静か → 静かだって. For nouns, attach だって directly: 子供 → 子供だって.

This たって is a colloquial and emphatic way to say 'even if' or 'even though'. It often carries a nuance that the condition doesn't matter or won't change the outcome. For example, if you say '急いだって間に合わない', you mean that even if you hurry, you won't make it—hurrying is pointless. It can also be used with い-adjectives, like '高くたって買う' (even if it's expensive, I'll buy it), or with nouns, like '子供だって分かる' (even a child understands).

急いだって、電車にはもう間に合わないよ。
Isoida tte, densha ni wa mou maniawanai yo.
Even if you hurry, you won't make the train now.
高くたって、この指輪を買うよ。
Takaku tatte, kono yubiwa o kau yo.
Even if it's expensive, I'll buy this ring.
子供だって、そのくらいのことは分かる。
Kodomo datte, sono kurai no koto wa wakaru.
Even a child can understand something like that.
Not ても (te mo) ても is more neutral and common in both spoken and written Japanese. たって is more colloquial and emphatic, often used in casual speech to stress that the condition is irrelevant or to express frustration or determination.
Register Casual and spoken. Avoid in formal writing or polite conversation; use ても instead in those contexts.
