📝 Usage Notes

there is no need to; no possibility that~

📖 How to use it

Expresses that there is no need to do something, or sometimes that there is no possibility of something happening.

Attaches to Attach to the dictionary form of a verb for both meanings. For 'no need', use V-dictionary + ことはない. For 'no possibility', also use V-dictionary + ことはない.

ことはない is a sentence-final pattern that has two main uses. The most common is to say that there is no necessity to do something, similar to 'you don't have to' or 'there's no need to'. For example, if a friend is worrying about something trivial, you can say 心配することはない (You don't need to worry). This use often carries a nuance of reassurance or telling someone not to bother.

The second, less common use expresses that there is no possibility of something happening. In this case, it attaches to the dictionary form of a verb, as in そんなことがあることはない (There is no possibility that such a thing happens). This usage is more formal and often found in written or careful speech.

It is important to remember that ことはない is a fairly formal expression. In casual conversation, you might hear it, but it can sound a bit stiff. For everyday speech, you could use なくていい or する必要はない for 'no need', and はずがない for 'no possibility'.

心配することはないよ。きっと上手くいくさ。
Shinpai suru koto wa nai yo. Kitto umaku iku sa.
You don't need to worry. It'll be fine.
無理に全部食べることはない。残してもいいよ。
Muri ni zenbu taberu koto wa nai. Nokoshite mo ii yo.
You don't have to force yourself to eat everything. It's okay to leave some.
彼がそんなことを言うことはない。
Kare ga sonna koto o iu koto wa nai.
There's no possibility that he would say such a thing.
Not ことがある ことはない expresses 'no need' or 'no possibility', while ことがある expresses 'there are times when' or 'have experienced'. They are opposite in meaning. Attach both to the dictionary form for habitual actions, but ことがある can also attach to past form to mean 'have done before'.
Register Somewhat formal and often used in written or careful speech; in casual conversation, alternatives like ~なくていい or ~はずがない are more common.
