📝 Usage Notes

because; since ~

📖 How to use it

A formal/literary pattern meaning 'because; since', used to give a reason or excuse in writing or formal speech.

Attaches to Attach to the plain form of verbs/adjectives, or to a noun + の. For な-adjectives, use なこととて.

こととて is a stiff, bookish way to say 'because' or 'given that.' It often appears in official notices, business correspondence, or historical narratives. You attach it to the plain past or non-past form, but in practice it's most often used with past tense or with nouns to state an existing situation. The nuance is that the reason justifies something, like an excuse or a necessary condition. For example, 初めてのこととて (since it's the first time) sounds like you're excusing possible mistakes. It's not something you'd say to a friend—it would sound like you're quoting a legal document. Stick to written contexts or formal speeches.

Not 〜ことだから ことだから also means 'because it is (someone/something)', but it is used when the speaker assumes the listener shares the same knowledge about a person or situation, and often implies a judgment (e.g., 彼のことだから、また遅れるよ). こととて is more objective and formal, stating a reason without that shared-knowledge nuance.
Register Formal and literary; used in writing, official announcements, and very formal speech, not in casual conversation.
