📝 Usage Notes

to do (polite form of する)

📖 How to use it

いたします is the humble (kenjougo) counterpart of する, used to humble one's own actions in polite contexts.

Attaches to For the verb する itself, it becomes いたします. For other verbs, humble speech is formed by using お/ご + ます-stem (or noun) + いたします, e.g., お知らせいたします, ご案内いたします. Alternatively, specific humble verbs exist such as 伺う, 参る, 申す, etc. いたします is not a suffix attached directly to verb stems.

いたします is the humble form of します (to do). It lowers the speaker's own action to show respect to the listener or to a third party. You use it when talking about your own actions in service to someone else, like in business or formal situations. For example, when introducing yourself or describing something you will do for a customer or superior, you say いたします instead of します.

私がご案内いたします。
Watashi ga go-annai itashimasu.
I will guide you.
明日、お電話いたします。
Ashita, o-denwa itashimasu.
I will call you tomorrow.
この仕事は私がいたします。
Kono shigoto wa watashi ga itashimasu.
I will do this work.
Not します (polite form of する) します is standard polite, used for anyone. いたします is humble, used only for your own actions when showing deference to the listener. For example, a waiter says ご案内いたします to a customer, not ご案内します.
Register Formal and humble; used in business, customer service, and formal speeches. Not used in casual conversation.
