The Heart: 心 and Its Hidden Forms

The Heart as a Picture

Last time, we saw how 手 (hand) becomes 扌 when it grabs the left side of another kanji. Now, let's look at the heart. The kanji 心 (こころ) is a picture of a real heart, with its chambers and valves. Over time, it got tidied up into four strokes, but the shape still hints at the organ: the left and right drops are the atria, the middle hook is the aorta. When you see 心, think of a heart beating in your chest.

The Heart as a Radical

Like the hand, the heart changes shape when it's part of another character. On the left side, it becomes 忄 (the 'heart radical'), as in 忙 (いそがしい, busy). That's a heart (忄) next to '亡' (which means 'lost' or 'deceased'). The idea? When you're busy, your heart is 'lost' — you're so occupied that you lose yourself. That's a vivid image, isn't it?

Another form is 㣺, which appears at the bottom of some characters. You'll see it in 思 (おもう, to think). 思 is '田' (field) on top and 心 below. Why a field? Because thinking is like a field where ideas grow. The heart is the soil. So when you think, you're cultivating your heart-mind.

Words with Heart

Let's see the heart in action:

• 心 (こころ) – heart, mind, spirit. This is the standalone kanji.
• 思う (おもう) – to think, to feel. It uses the bottom 心 form.
• 忙しい (いそがしい) – busy. The heart radical on the left.
• 安心 (あんしん) – relief, peace of mind. 安 means 'peaceful', so 安心 is a peaceful heart.
• 心配 (しんぱい) – worry, concern. 配 means 'distribute', so worry is distributing your heart in many directions.
• 恋 (こい) – love, romance. This one has 心 at the bottom, too.

Reading the Heart

Notice that 心 takes different readings. Alone, it's こころ. In compounds like 安心, it's しん. And in verbs like 思う, the whole kanji is read おもう. That's typical for kanji: the reading changes with context.

A Moment to Feel

Take a breath. Think of a time you were truly busy — 忙しい. Did your heart feel lost? And when you felt relief — 安心 — did your heart settle? The Japanese language connects these emotions to the heart, just as we do in English. But the kanji makes it visible.

Tomorrow: Water
