The Hand That Holds and Hits: 手 and 扌

See the hand in 手, then find it hiding in every action that uses one.

JLPT N5 · 20 Aug 2026

The Hand Itself: 手

Yesterday you saw 目 as an eye that got tidied up over the centuries. Today's kanji is even easier to see: 手 is a hand. Look at it and you can almost make out the fingers, the palm, the wrist. It started as a drawing of a hand with five fingers, and after three thousand years of tidying, it became the neat five-stroke character you see now.

In Japanese, 手(て)means 'hand'. You'll also find it in words like 手紙(てがみ)'letter' (literally 'hand paper') and 手伝う(てつだう)'to help' (literally 'hand + to accompany'). When you help, your hand is right there.

The Radical That Acts: 扌

Now, here's the trick. When the hand is part of a bigger character, it often gets squished into the left side as 扌. This is called the 'hand radical'. It's the same hand, just squeezed to make room for whatever the hand is doing.

Take 持(もつ)'to hold'. The left side is the hand radical, and the right side is 寺 (temple). Together, a hand at a temple — holding something? In old Japan, temples held many things, and the hand holds too. So 持 means 'to hold' or 'to have'.

Or take 打(うつ)'to hit'. The hand radical is on the left, and the right side is 丁 (a nail or a street block). A hand with a nail? You hit the nail with a hand. So 打 is 'to hit'.

See how the hand radical gives the meaning? The right side often gives a hint about the sound or a related image, but the hand is the action.

A Family of Hand Actions

Once you know 扌, you'll start seeing it everywhere. Here are three more hand actions that use it:

Each of these has the hand radical, and each is an action you do with your hand. It's a family. When you see 扌, think: 'this has something to do with a hand.'

Why This Matters

Kanji are not random squiggles. They are pictures that got tidied up. When you learn the hand radical, you're not memorizing a shape — you're seeing a hand. And once you see it, you'll never unsee it. That's the point of this series: we're putting the pictures back.

So next time you write 手, trace the fingers. Next time you see 持, imagine a hand at a temple. Next time you see 打, imagine a hand with a nail. The picture is there, waiting for you.

Tomorrow, we'll move from the hand to the heart. What happens when the heart is inside a character? You'll find out.
