か き く け こ: Five Shapes, One Consonant

Add k- to the vowels you already know, then read かき, いけ and こえ without pausing.

JLPT N5 · 26 Oct 2026

The k- column

Yesterday you learned the five vowels: あ い う え お. Today you add a consonant to each one. The k- row is か き く け こ — ka, ki, ku, ke, ko. Same five vowels, now with a k- in front.

The shapes are not random. か is あ with a short stroke added at the top left. き and く share a diagonal feel. け and こ are built from simple lines. You do not need to memorise them as pictures; you need to see them often enough that they stop being pictures.

Katakana: same sounds, sharper lines

The katakana k-row is カ キ ク ケ コ. Notice カ looks close to か, キ close to き, ク close to く, ケ close to け, コ close to こ. They are not identical, but the family resemblance is real. Read them as the same sounds:

Three words to anchor the row

Start with かき(かき)— persimmon. Two kana, both from today's row. Say it: ka-ki. Notice the second kana is き, not け or く.

Next, いけ(いけ)— pond. The first kana is い from yesterday; the second is け. So the word is i-ke, not i-ka.

Then こえ(こえ)— voice. First kana こ, second え. ko-e. The え is the same vowel you met yesterday.

Read each one aloud three times, then cover the romaji and read again.

Typing drill

If you have a Japanese keyboard, type these. If not, write them by hand on paper — the muscle memory is the point.

  1. かき
  2. いけ
  3. こえ
  4. カキ
  5. イケ
  6. コエ

Then mix rows: あか (red), あき (autumn), こい (carp — or deep, depending on context). These are real words, not random strings, which makes them easier to remember.

Reading inside short words

Here are a few more words that use today's kana plus yesterday's vowels:

Read them without stopping. If you hesitate on き, go back to かき and say it slowly. The goal is not speed yet; it is recognition without translation.

A note on こえ

こえ(こえ)means voice. You will hear it in phrases like こえがたかい(こえがたかい)— a high voice. The が is not today's row, so just notice it for now. Tomorrow's s-row will give you more pieces.

What to practise today

Write each kana five times: か き く け こ and カ キ ク ケ コ. Then read the three anchor words ten times each. Then type or write the six drill items above. That is enough. Short and repeated beats long and once.

If you are in your city or anywhere else, you can do this on a bus or at a kitchen table. No special setup needed. The point is to see the shapes until they feel familiar, the same way you recognise a sign you pass every day.

Tomorrow adds a new row and a new problem: two kana that look alike. You will need today's k-row to tell them apart.
