Overview
Sendai Castle — 仙台城 (せんだいじょう, Sendai-jō) — is a Japanese castle in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Construction began in 1601, in year 6 of the Keichō era (慶長, けいちょう), during the Azuchi–Momoyama period. The castle sits at coordinates 38.2524780, 140.8561560, in what is now Aoba-ku, one of Sendai's wards.
It is also known as Aoba Castle (青葉城, あおばじょう, Aoba-jō), after the hill on which it stands, and as Gojō-rō (五城楼, ごじょうろう). For the whole of the Edo period it was the seat of the Date clan, the daimyō (大名, だいみょう, feudal lords) of Sendai Domain. The castle is counted among the 100 Fine Castles of Japan, and its ruins were designated a National Historic Site in 2003.
History
Date Masamune (伊達政宗, だて まさむね) founded the castle in 1601, the year construction began. He was one of the most powerful lords of northern Japan, and the stronghold on Mount Aoba became the political and military centre of his territory.
The castle remained the headquarters of Sendai Domain throughout the Edo period, which ran from 1603 to 1868. The Date clan lived there continuously across those generations, governing their domain from the hilltop above the city.
The site's defensive logic lay in its position. Mount Aoba rises above the Hirose River, and the castle made use of the natural elevation and the river below. The main enclosure, the honmaru (本丸, ほんまる), occupied the summit.
What Stands There Today
The castle no longer survives as a set of buildings. What remains are the stone walls, earthworks and layout of the original fortifications, preserved as ruins.
Two features now occupy the site. The Miyagi Gokoku Shrine (宮城縣護國神社, みやぎけんごこくじんじゃ) stands within the castle grounds, and Aobayama Park (青葉山公園, あおばやまこうえん) covers the surrounding area. The ruins were designated a National Historic Site in 2003.
The Name in Japanese
The castle carries two everyday names, and both are worth knowing.
仙台城 — kana: せんだいじょう — romaji: Sendai-jō. This is the name that matches the modern city of Sendai.
- 仙 (せん, sen) — "hermit", "wizard", or "immortal". In Chinese and Japanese tradition this character refers to a mountain-dwelling sage. It is the first element of the place name Sendai.
- 台 (だい, dai) — "platform", "pedestal", or "terrace". Here it refers to a raised flat surface, fitting for a castle built on a plateau.
- 城 (じょう, jō) — "castle". This is the standard kanji for a Japanese castle, and it appears in castle names across the country, from Osaka Castle (大坂城) to Himeji Castle (姫路城). Note the sound change: the character is read shiro when it stands alone, but jō when attached to a place name, as here.
So 仙台城 breaks down as "Sendai" plus "castle" — the castle of Sendai.
青葉城 — kana: あおばじょう — romaji: Aoba-jō. This is the poetic name, taken from the hill.
- 青 (あお, ao) — "blue" or "green". Japanese traditionally uses one word for the range of colours English splits into blue and green, so this character covers both.
- 葉 (ば, ba) — "leaf". Alone it is read ha; in compounds it often voices to ba.
- 城 (じょう, jō) — "castle", as above.
青葉 therefore means "green leaves" or "fresh foliage", and 青葉城 is "Green Leaf Castle" — a name drawn from the wooded slope it commands.
The third name, 五城楼 (ごじょうろう, Gojō-rō), is a literary alternative. 楼 (ろう, rō) means a tower or a multi-storeyed building, so the whole reads as something like "the five-castle tower" — a flourish rather than a formal designation.
Visiting and Context
The castle grounds sit in Aoba-ku in central Sendai, on the hill of Mount Aoba, with the Hirose River below. The site is reached on foot or by city transport from the centre of Sendai, and the park and shrine are open to visitors.
For anyone studying Japanese, Sendai Castle is a useful landmark because its name teaches three things at once. It shows how 城 changes reading depending on whether it stands alone or attaches to a place name. It shows the voiced sound change in 葉 → ば. And it shows that a single Japanese colour word, 青, covers ground that English divides between blue and green — a difference that shapes how place names are read and understood.
The castle's association with Date Masamune also makes it a natural entry point into the history of the Date clan and Sendai Domain, and into the wider story of castle-building in Japan at the start of the seventeenth century.
