Used for physically stopping while walking, often in response to something noticed; more deliberate than 止まる.
彼女は突然立ち止まって空を見上げた。
Kanojo wa totsuzen tachidomatte sora o miageta.
She suddenly stopped and looked up at the sky.
知らない道で立ち止まり、地図を確認した。
Shiranai michi de tachidomari, chizu o kakunin shita.
I stopped on an unfamiliar street and checked the map.
⚖️ Not to be confused with 止まる, which is general stopping (vehicles, machines) and not limited to people on foot.
