- imibi unlucky day (according to astrology), (previously a) death anniversary, purification and fast day
A traditional term for inauspicious days, now rare; appears in historical or religious contexts, unlike everyday 'warui hi'.
今日は忌み日だから、旅行はやめよう。
Kyō wa imibi dakara, ryokō wa yameyō.
Today is an unlucky day, so let's not travel.
忌み日には結婚式を挙げない習慣がある。
Imibi ni wa kekkonshiki o agenai shūkan ga aru.
There is a custom not to hold weddings on unlucky days.
⚖️ Not to be confused with 'kinenbi' (anniversary), which sounds similar but means a commemorative day.
