- asha (a) mute, mute person
This is an outdated, now derogatory term for a mute person; learners may encounter it only in older literature or historical texts, not in polite conversation.
その唖者は手話で話した。
Sono asha wa shuwa de hanashita.
That mute person spoke in sign language.
唖者という言葉は今では使われない。
Asha to iu kotoba wa ima de wa tsukawarenai.
The word 'asha' is not used nowadays.
⚖️ Often confused with 聾者 (ろうしゃ, deaf person), but 唖者 refers specifically to inability to speak, not hearing loss.
