Who They Were
Minamoto no Tsunemoto (源経基) was a samurai and Imperial Prince of the Heian period (794–1185). He is remembered as one of the progenitors of the Seiwa Genji, the branch of the Minamoto clan descended from Emperor Seiwa. Tsunemoto was born on 6 March 890 and died on 30 December 961.
He was the son of Sadasumi-shinnō, a prince, and Minamoto Gara-ko. Through his father, Tsunemoto was a grandson of Emperor Seiwa. Legend holds that in childhood he was called Rokusonnō (六孫王). The name draws on two elements: roku (六, 'six'), because his father was the sixth son of Emperor Seiwa, and son (孫, 'grandson'), marking Tsunemoto as the Emperor's grandson.
Life and Career
Tsunemoto lived during a turbulent stretch of the Heian period, when provincial unrest and pirate activity tested the Imperial Court's authority. He served the Court in several military campaigns. In 940, he took part in operations against Taira no Masakado, a powerful warlord who had declared himself ruler of the eastern provinces. The following year, 941, Tsunemoto fought against Fujiwara no Sumitomo, a former provincial official turned pirate leader in the Inland Sea.
For his service, Tsunemoto received the title of Chinjufu-shōgun, or Commander-in-chief of the Defense of the North. This post placed him in charge of guarding the northern frontier of Honshū, the main island of Japan, against potential threats from the Emishi and other groups beyond direct Court control.
In 961, the same year he died, the Emperor granted Tsunemoto the clan name of Minamoto. This act formally separated him from the Imperial lineage and placed him among the ranks of the Minamoto, a surname that would become one of the most famous in Japanese military history.
Why They Matter
Tsunemoto's significance rests on his position as a founding figure of the Seiwa Genji. Before his time, the Minamoto name had been granted to other Imperial descendants, but Tsunemoto's line, traced through Emperor Seiwa, became the dominant and most celebrated branch. The Seiwa Genji would go on to produce generations of warriors, administrators, and shōguns who shaped Japan for centuries.
His military career also mattered. By fighting for the Court against Masakado and Sumitomo, Tsunemoto helped uphold the central government's authority during a period when regional power was beginning to slip from its grasp. His role as Chinjufu-shōgun tied him directly to the defence of the northern frontier, a duty that carried both military and symbolic weight.
Tsunemoto's grant of the Minamoto surname in 961 was a pivotal moment. It set a pattern for how the Court could manage surplus Imperial princes: rather than maintaining them as potential claimants to the throne, the Emperor could turn them into loyal aristocratic servants. This practice, applied to Tsunemoto, created the foundation for a warrior clan that would eventually overshadow the very Court that had created it.
The Name in Japanese
The name is written 源経基.
- Kana reading: みなもと つねもと
- Romaji: Minamoto no Tsunemoto
The surname 源 (Minamoto) is composed of one kanji:
- 源: reading in this word, みなもと (minamoto). The character means 'source' or 'spring', as in the origin of a river. As a clan name, it carried the sense of a wellspring of lineage.
The given name 経基 (Tsunemoto) is composed of two kanji:
- 経: reading in this word, つね (tsune). The character means 'pass through', 'endure', or 'constant'. In names, it often conveys the idea of continuity or lasting quality.
- 基: reading in this word, もと (moto). The character means 'foundation' or 'base'. It suggests something upon which other things are built.
Taken together, 経基 can be read as a name evoking a constant or enduring foundation. The full name, 源経基, thus combines the idea of a source (源) with that of a lasting base (経基), fitting for a man positioned at the origin of a major clan.
Legacy
Tsunemoto's most direct legacy was his son, Minamoto no Mitsunaka, who carried the Seiwa Genji line forward. Mitsunaka would become a powerful military figure in his own right, serving the Fujiwara regents and expanding the clan's influence. From Tsunemoto's descendants came the Minamoto leaders who would later challenge and eventually supplant the Imperial Court's military power.
The Seiwa Genji produced some of the most famous figures in Japanese history, including Minamoto no Yoritomo, who founded the Kamakura shogunate in 1192. Every major Minamoto warlord of the medieval period could trace his ancestry back to Tsunemoto. The clan name he received in 961 became a badge of martial prestige that endured for centuries.
Tsunemoto's own military actions, while notable, were overshadowed by the legacy of his bloodline. His campaigns against Masakado and Sumitomo were early examples of the kind of provincial warfare that would define the samurai class. His title of Chinjufu-shōgun placed him in a line of commanders responsible for the northern borders, a role that later Minamoto leaders would also hold.
The legend of Rokusonnō, his childhood name, kept his memory alive in a different way. It tied him directly to Emperor Seiwa and the Imperial house, reinforcing the prestige of the Seiwa Genji as a lineage of royal descent turned warrior. Tsunemoto's life bridged two worlds: the courtly aristocracy of the Heian capital and the emerging military class that would one day dominate Japan.
