What is a surface form in Japanese? ▼
A surface form (表層形) is the exact word as it appears in text — including conjugated verbs, inflected adjectives, and particles in context. This differs from the lemma (dictionary base form). For example, "食べた" is a surface form; its lemma is "食べる".
What does "pron" (pronunciation) show? ▼
The pronunciation field shows the reading in hiragana or katakana as produced by the UniDic tokenizer. For most entries this matches the standard reading, but for irregular kanji compounds it shows the actual spoken form.
How do I search by kanji, kana or reading? ▼
Type any kanji, hiragana, katakana or romaji into the search box. The dictionary searches surface forms, pronunciations and lemmas simultaneously. Use the Part of Speech pills to narrow results further.
